There is something about white peaches that tells me summer is here. White peach cobbler is the perfect start to summer with the sweet, spicy filling covered in the cakey topping. Ugh, so good.
In Birmingham, we have the Alabama Farmers Market. You'll also hear me, and others around here, call it Finley (because it's located on Finley Ave in downtown Birmingham).
It's this really unique version of a farmers' market where farmers across the entire state bring their produce to sell and distribute. All the smaller farmers markets in the area end up getting their produce from Finley, so we usually like to go to the source because you get a wider selection usually for a better price.
Plus, it's fun to go first thing in the morning because you get to watch these merchandisers buying bulk produce. Last time we were there, we got there super early on a Saturday, and there were pick-up trucks and moving trucks and vans and everything in between crowded in the back getting loaded down with these big cardboard corrals of watermelons. And, let me just say, they were some beautiful looking watermelons.
But we never buy from the very back, we usually stick to the center where you can buy smaller amounts of produce. We had gone around May 20th, and there were a ton of annual fruits they have all year. Lots of sweet potatoes, tomatoes, and strawberries.
When we went the next week, all I could see were peaches everywhere. Beautiful, big Chilton County peaches. And I knew, summer in Alabama had arrived.
See, everyone always thinks of Georgia when it comes to peaches, but Chilton County has some of the best peaches I've ever had. I mean, I had never even seen a white peach until I moved to Alabama and had one grown in Chilton County.
First of all, white peaches are gorgeous. They look great in cocktails next to raspberries. But they're also so much sweeter. Yellow peaches have that slightly acidic taste that balances well with the sweetness that comes from being really ripened. White peaches lack that acid, and they're sweet whether they're fully ripe or not.
While I do love the traditional yellow peach, I really encourage you to try white peaches the next chance you get. They're one of my favorite fruits. I cannot get enough of them during peach season.
This white peach cobbler is one of my favorite recipes to make during summer. It's sweet, spicy, and warm. With a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top, it's the perfect way to end a warm summer's day.

White Peach Cobbler
Ingredients
Peach Filling
- 5 white peaches peeled and sliced
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- ¼ teaspoon ginger
- ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
- ¼ teaspoon allspice
- ¼ teaspoon salt
Cobbler Topping
- 1 cup self-rising flour
- ½ cup brown sugar
- ½ cup butter
- ½ cup milk
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350F.
- In a large pot over medium heat, add ingredients for peach filling. Stir and cook over medium heat for five minutes. Juice from peaches should be about covering the peaches now. Remove from heat and pour into your large casserole dish.
- In a bowl, combine flour and brown sugar. Using a pastry dough blender, cut the butter into the flour and sugar until only small, pea size pieces of butter remain. Stir in milk.
- Spoon the topping onto the peaches. If you want the peach mixture to peak through the topping, leave gaps between spoonfuls. If not, spread across top.
- Bake for an hour, until top is golden brown. Let cool for 10 minutes before serving. Enjoy!
